About the New Markets Lab

Our Mission
NML’s mission is to leverage law and regulation as a tool for sustainable economic and social development. NML's work is driven by the needs of real people, in real-time, across borders. NML has developed an approach and methodology for legal and regulatory change, which focuses on research, empirical study, and engagement of public and private stakeholders to integrate stakeholder-driven considerations into the design and implementation of laws and regulations.

Our Vision
NML’s vision is to advance a new model for law and development that builds sustainable markets, enhances legal capacity, and paves the way for the next generation of lawyers. We believe that sustainable economic development will rely upon legal and regulatory systems that are designed and applied to reflect the needs of developing economies, individuals, and vulnerable communities. NML's international and entrepreneurial team, many of whom are young lawyers from around the world with a different vision for the role of law in economic development, is achieving this vision by upending traditional models for legal and regulatory reform. Economic law should be benchmarked against the potential for economic growth, poverty reduction, and stakeholder participation, reinforcing the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

How?
NML has developed a new approach and methodology for legal and regulatory change, which engages public and private stakeholders; integrates research, data, and empirical work; and integrates social and economic considerations in the design and implementation of economic rules. Through its programs and thought leadership, NML bridges the gap between high-level law and policy and on-the-ground realities in order to build legal systems that can deliver on development goals, strengthen rule of law, and improve application of the law in practice.
